Dontae Payne, Regional Representative for the South Sound and Olympic Peninsula, is part of Governor Inslee’s External Affairs (Outreach) team. He came up with the idea of a proclamation recognizing the anniversary of the Black Lives Matter movement after a discussion with his colleagues on racism in government and the importance for specific acknowledgment of the impact of racism on Black Americans for centuries. Dontae believes this moment demands an official acknowledgment of systemic and institutional racism as we proceed with the work to dismantle it.
