The topic of discussion: How HR can help create a more inclusive workplace for people of color
Location: Online (to register see below)

Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Research shows that diverse and inclusive workplaces have higher levels of performance and engagement but that workplaces that only focus on diversity without inclusion create workplaces where diverse staff are either highly unengaged or outright leave. SHRM describes the inclusion piece of D&I as “making sure those different voices are heard and valued and that they contribute to the performance” of your organization. In this Lunch and Learn, the members of the BUILD Business Resource Group will share with you tips on how workforce data can be used to measure inclusion, tips on how HR professionals can help influence a more inclusive workplace, and share with you some voices of BRG members on what an inclusive workplace would look like for them.
Michaela is the leader of the HR team at the Employment Security Department. She’s also held HR leadership roles at Department of Enterprise Services, Commerce and Department of Transportation and has been working in state government HR since 2007. She is an active member and ally of the BUILD BRG and has focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work and how it applies and is built into HR work since 2015.
Connie Terry has been employed with the State since 2008. She has previously held positions with the Child Study and Treatment Center- Psychic Child Care counselor and Community Services Office -SW. She is currently employed by DSHS-DDA (Developmental Disabilities Administration. She supervises 10 Case Resource Managers who provide case management for people with disabilities, she is also the acting EDI Regional Coordinator for DDA Region 3 and oversees the Wellness and Diversity Committees in the Tacoma DDA office.
