A message from the Washington Immigrant Network (WIN), a fellow BRG. A Message in Support of BUILD BRG (Blacks United in Leadership and Diversity)
June 4, 2020 Dear fellow WIN members: Yesterday, our fellow coworkers and fellow Business Resource Group (BRG), the Blacks United in Leadership and Diversity (BUILD), issued the statement on violence toward the Black community. They called on “those who can speak truth into power, bravely denouncing the oppressive acts that have created dissension within our communities.” WIN will answer that call. It is not only the right thing to do, but it is also our moral duty. We are immigrants or the children of immigrants. We did not arrive in this country in bondage; some of us came here to escape bondage. But that is not the case for the ancestors of our Black coworkers. They came here as slaves, and have fought their way out of slavery, had to spend the next 200 plus years fighting a racist and oppressive society. We are the benefactors of the many improvements that the Black community has given up its bodies and lives for. This includes eliminating discriminatory hiring policies which would have affected our careers and could have prevented some of us from state service. So we will do everything we can to denounce any oppressive act toward the Black community. We are connecting with BUILD and seeking their guidance on how we can best support them. There is a general membership meeting on June 18, 9 – 11:30 a.m. that is open to everyone. If you are interested in attending this virtual meeting, please work with your supervisor to make arrangements for your work activities so that you can attend the meeting. We also want to hear from you. What ideas do you have to improve our society, especially the part of it that we control, our workplace? Let us know. In Solidarity, Lorraine Lee, WIN Executive Sponsor Comments are closed.
